lennon'un oğlu julian'ın kreşten arkadaşıdır bu lucy. bir gün bebe jude kreşten gelip "baba bak lucy in the sky with diamonds çizdim" diyerek çizdiği lucy'nin resmini lennon'a göstermiş. muhtemelen lennon da bulutların üstünde gezdiği bir vakit şarkıyı yazmıştır. ha kafasının iyi olduğunu kendisi yalanlamış ama bana öyle gibi geldi ayık kafayla yazılmaz bu şarkı. şarkı aslında sgt. pepper's lonely hearts club band albümünde olmasına rağmen yellow submarine animasyonunda nowhere man ve lennon düeti vardır, yellow submarine albümüne ise koyulmamıştır.
